Nook Tablet Review: A Good Tablet and the Most Expensive
By
For $249, the Nook Tablet is a good deal – although it is $50 more than the Kindle Fire. While it has the capabilities of an eReader, it really stands out as a tablet device with all the features of other high end tablets. And with 16GB of space, you are more likely to be able to keep you music, TV shows, photos, apps, and a library on the Nook Tablet than on it’s little brother, the Nook Touch (8GB). The Nook Tablet comes ready to go with the apps that you will probably use most often. Barnes and Noble’s reading app allows you to choose from over 2.5 million books, as well as a huge range of magazines and newspapers, comic books and children’s books.
At the same time, you will be ready to go with game apps, like Sudoku and Scrabble, as well as Angry Birds and other popular apps. The Netflix and Hulu Plus apps come installed on the Nook Tablet, which means you’ll have access to movies and TV shows whenever you want them. Nook Kids keeps your children entertained with interactive ebooks and activities. And there are of course the email, web browser, and social networking capabilities which make tablets convenient as well as fun.
Of course, if you purchase a Nook Tablet and have any problems with it whatsoever, don’t expect Barnes and Noble to help you out. Barnes and Noble Customer Service is notorious for being unable to help. Even with the protection plan, if something goes wrong with your Nook Tablet you will probably be sent a refurbished product rather than a new one. Owners of Nook products are consistent about one thing: customer service makes everything less worthwhile.

On the other hand, most people do not have problems and therefore do not need to deal with customer service. Besides the customer service woes, the only other complaint has to do with storage space. While you do have 16GB of space, you can only use 1GB for storage of your own stuff. In other words, you can only fill your large storage capacity with the things that you buy from Barnes and Noble. If you are hoping to be able to put your own content on the Nook Tablet, you’ll need to purchase an SD card with the capacity to handle whatever it is you want. If you are happy to buy only from Barnes and Noble, you probably won’t even notice that there is a problem.
When compared to the other Nook products, the Nook Simple Touch, a basic eReader, and the Nook Touch, a slightly less fun version of the Nook Tablet, the Nook Tablet is obviously the top of the line for what it is offering. The Nook Touch is $50 cheaper, but has half the storage space and is the same dimensions, 5in by 8.1in. However, the Nook Tablet is about 2 ounces lighter. Compared with the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet is only slightly larger but with twice the memory. The Kindle Fire seems to compare more closely to the Nook Touch, which puts the Nook Tablet on its own in the eReader meets tablet department. For the price and with the features, the Nook Tablet presents a very fun alternative to the pricier full-scale tablets with decent speed and nice features.
